Psoriasis Linked to Beer Consumption; Gluten to Blame?
A spate of recent headlines advertised a link researchers found in this study between the autoimmune disease psoriasis and non-light beer consumption. Women who drank non-light beer - but not those who drank light beer, wine or liquor - were 1.76 times as likely to develop psoriasis than other women. The researchers speculated that the gluten in the barley was to blame.

...Celiac Disease Affects Menstrual Cycle, Pregnancy, Italian Study Finds
Those of us with celiac disease know it affects far more than just our digestive systems. Millet flour, soy flour, buckwheat flour and sorghum flour - all common ingredients in store-bought gluten-free baked goods and other products - were the worst offenders.
...Gluten in 'Gluten-Free' Grains?
For someone who has celiac disease, this is a scary study: researchers found gluten - in several cases, lots of gluten - in supposedly gluten-free grains and flours.
The research team, led by celiac nutritionist Tricia Thompson, RN, investigated the gluten content of so-called "single ingredient" grains, seeds and flours, including gluten-free diet staples like millet, white rice, buckwheat, sorghum and soy. The team purchased 22 different single-ingredient products and sent them in unopened packages to a testing lab that analyzed them for gluten content.
...Canada Considering Gluten-Free Labeling for Oats
There's good news for Canadian celiacs who can tolerate oats: Regulatory agency Health Canada says it intends to implement labeling rules for gluten-free oats and wants consumer input.
Research indicates that the majority of people with celiac disease can tolerate pure oats, as long as the oats avoid contamination with wheat, barley and rye grains in the fields and during harvesting, storage and processing.

It's clearly time for me to break out my baking pans and mixer: Pamela's Products (one of my favorite gluten-free mix manufacturers) has just announced its annual recipe contest.
This year's theme is "Bite-Sized Delights," and Pamela's is encouraging contestants to make miniature versions of their favorite gluten-free treats using any Pamela's brand product. Think mini-muffins, tapas, hush puppies or even tiny pizzas - the possibilities are endless (and I'm getting really hungry).
